Volunteers Needed to Help Plant Blueberries

We’re organizing to plant nine blueberry patches around Forest Heights on the weekend of February 6-7.

We expect the planting to take two full days, and we hope to have about 10 volunteers working with us at all times. Kids are welcome, though we ask that at least one parent be on hand to keep an eye on them for safety. Also, we ask that all volunteers wear face masks and do their best to maintain social distancing.

In order to ensure that we don’t have 40 volunteers Saturday morning and none after lunch, we’re asking all volunteers to commit to time blocks by adding names onto this spreadsheet. (You don’t have to limit yourself to just one!)

We aim to begin work both days at 9:15 a.m. We’ll take an hour off for lunch at 12:30 and then resume in the afternoon 12:30-5:00). On the first day, we plan to prepare all nine planting beds. Clyde will bring a large, professional-grade tiller, but we will need volunteers to shovel out the beds after each pass, and then refill the hole with soil conditioner. On the second day, we plan to plant all of the bushes, mulch, and install drip lines and deer cages.

In addition to volunteers , we also need some tools. Please mark on the spread sheet, if you’re able to bring any of the following. (Ideally, we’ll have at least two trucks available during each volunteer shift to haul away dirt and haul in soil conditioner and mulch. Other necessary tools include:

  • tarps

  • wheelbarrows

  • shovels

  • garden rakes/hoes

  • pick axe/mattock

  • wire cutters & pliers (for making deer cages)

Thanks in advance! We’re super excited to see this project coming to fruition!
